Family Crests

This clay-working session focuses on creating personal crests to represent one's roots. Samples of Scottish and Irish clan crests, and British coats of arms were used to demonstrate the symbolism that can be used to represent a group of people. The group brainstormed about the purpose of these types of crests and suggested family pride and identifying allies in battle as possible purposes. They were then encouraged to create their own crests to represent their heritage. Clients chose to focus on a variety of themes such as favorite activities, places they had lived, family traditions and personal faith.

Here, the artist created an image of a pipe in her work because her father always smoked an old-fashioned pipe. On the sides of the plaque she wrote the words Conn (Connecticut) and Virginia to represent places she has lived in her life.
