Life Books

Perhaps the greatest benefits of art therapy is the chance it allows seniors to reminisce and share memories. In art therapy, the finished artwork is shared with the group, and group members are encouraged to discuss their artwork, intentions, and memories, giving them a chance to openly discuss their feelings and relate to each others' experiences. Life books are the documentation of these memories. Group members are asked to create artwork that portrays different types of memories. The stories are then documented and affixed to the artwork in some way. Different pieces of art are created throughout a number of sessions and then compiled into a book- an illustrated account of the client's life, a lasting legacy which can be passed down to family members, kept or given as a gift.

In this session, clients were asked to create a piece of artwork related to their favorite summertime memory. The artist of this piece, related her memories of playing marbles with the boys in her neighborhood when she was growing up.
