Mask-Making
Masks are an excellent metaphor to use in artwork. In mask-making sessions, discussion is usually focused on the many different personas that make up each individual. Do we portray ourselves differently in different circumstances? Do we wish we could be someone different? Do we hide our true nature, and if so, why? Making masks can also be excellent tactile stimulation for clients who have low vision, blindness, or advanced stages of dementia.
The above mask was created during a session that took place around Halloween. The group discussed the purposes of masks, why we wear costumes around Halloween, and the feelings that can be associated with looking differently than we are. The group was asked to create masks that answered the question "If you could be anyone, or do anything, who or what would you be and what would you do?" The artist here said she always wanted to be a dancer. |
