Re-Creation

Re-creation is an technique that involves creating a piece of artwork, destroying it, and re-creating it in a new way. This is an especially effective technique in helping to resolve trauma and grief, but can be applied more broadly to many areas of life. Clients work to create a piece of artwork, in some cases unaware that they will be asked to "ruin" it later. By tearing apart their painting or smashing their sculpture, they are able to experience the pain of loss in a safe environment, and with the encouragement of their peers, they are able to literally pick up the pieces, and re-create their work. Some clients struggle to put the pieces exactly as they were; others create something entirely new. However the new piece is created, the group is able to discuss the concepts of change and moving forward on many different levels.
